Description
Rear Protection Bars
Available in: Black or Chrome
The saddlebag protection bars are the ideal complement to our engine protection bars, but they can also be installed without them. They optically integrate to the bike and offer outstanding protection for the rear of the heavy K1600. If your bike were to tip over, the protruding saddlebags would surely suffer some damage. These bars effectively protect the saddlebags against such damage. Also when maneuvering in tight spaces, the bars can protect your bike from scratches and other damage.
Each saddlebag protection bar attaches to the bike at three points so that in case of a fall, the impact is spread over all points and the energy is absorbed. Ground clearance and cornering clearance is not compromised. Available chrome plated or powder coated black.

Tried bars from two other major manufacturers before these - the Wunderlich bars were the only ones that fit properly. They are well made with a decent finish (although mine had a couple small flaws probably due to rubbing in the shipping box, not serious enough to go through the hassle of exchanging them).
Not really wild about the large loop design but it is what it is. The only other issue is the mounting bolts - they are Allen-head and apparently made of somewhat soft steel. The sockets deformed even under the mild torque requirements, so I replaced them with proper Torx-head fasteners. This is cleaner as all the OEM fasteners are Torx and I don't like mixing styles.
I would recommend these bars but Wunderlich really should provide Torx bolts as they do with other products in their line.

Very difficult to lineup the bolt attachment for the muffler . TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS!!!

The bars were what I expected; well made and attractive. While there is different part numbers for right and left, the bars bore no identifying marks, so fitment was by trial and error. However, when I installed them per the instructions, the lids on my K1600GT bags touched the bars when opening. In short order, the paint on the leading edge of the bags would have been marred. I contacted Wunderlich America and they suggested I install spacers between the bar bracket and the muffler hanger. I purchased some steel washers at Lowes and installed one under the rear two bolts, but the clearance still was insufficient. I added a washer under the bolts, and the clearance was still closer than I liked, but if opened carefully no contact was made. I installed three washers under the right side, and that resulted in sufficient clearance, but I am concerned there is insufficient threads holding the bracket and may have trouble later. I had used Illium bars on my GTL with no problems, but that company was sold and moved to AZ, and they were 4 to 6 weeks from being able to ship, so I decided to give Wunderlich a try.
